SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is central to the way we design, work and operate.

As architects, we recognise our responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment and to create places that are healthy, resilient, inclusive and able to support future generations.

At Starc Architects, we consider sustainability from the earliest stages of every project. We seek opportunities to reuse existing buildings, reduce carbon, minimise resource consumption, improve energy and water efficiency, support biodiversity and create healthy environments for people.

We believe that good architecture and sustainability are inseparable. Our approach is based on careful design, long-term thinking and making the best use of the resources already available to us.

Our commitments

Design

  • Integrate environmental considerations into every stage of design.

  • Prioritise retrofit, adaptation and reuse wherever appropriate.

  • Reduce operational and embodied carbon.

  • Use materials responsibly and minimise waste.

  • Design for energy efficiency, comfort, health and resilience.

  • Consider biodiversity, landscape and the wider environment.

Our practice

  • Measure and reduce the environmental impact of our own operations.

  • Reduce energy, water consumption, waste and unnecessary travel.

  • Support responsible procurement and material choices.

  • Continue to develop the sustainability knowledge and skills of our team.

Learning and improvement

  • Monitor the environmental performance of our projects.

  • Use post-occupancy evaluation and feedback to improve future work.

  • Share knowledge and research across the practice.

  • Set clear targets and review our progress regularly.

Working together

We recognise that meaningful change cannot be achieved by architects alone. We work collaboratively with clients, consultants, contractors, communities and other partners to find practical solutions that deliver better environmental and social outcomes.

Our ambition is not simply to minimise harm, but to use architecture as a positive force for people, place and planet
