Radar Station, Rye

A conversion and extension to an existing Grade II listed Second World War radar station outside Rye, to provide a new 3 bedroom home.

When we were brought on board to assist with getting this project over the line, the site had already been refused consent.
​
Our approach started with a thorough exploration of the site and its history, establishing a set of constraints and opportunities in order to respond sensitively and appropriately to the surviving fabric of the existing building.
The site was complicated by the fact that the entire ground floor lay within an annual flood zone.
This drove the concept of the design to provide sleeping accommodation on the first floor in the form of a stealth like metal structure not unlike the aerofoil technology of the second world ware aeronautics.
